Marc Cary: Bringing It Back To His Go-Go Roots
Marc Cary came up playing in go-go bands in DC during the 1980s, when he was a founding member of the Hi Integrity Band. He played alongside leading lights of the city, people like Iceberg Slim and Meshell Ndegeocello. Meanwhile, he showed amazing amounts of natural talent early on, and a number of the city’s jazz musicians took him under their wing. When Dizzy Gillespie heard a teenage Cary play in the Blues Alley youth band one day, he told the kid he should move to New York.
George Clinton Can’t Prevent Sound Recordings From Being Sold
By Eriq Gardner
George Clinton won’t be able to stop a court-appointed receiver from selling “One Nation Under a Groove,” “Hardcore Jollies,” “Uncle Jam Wants You” and “The Electric Spanking of War Babies.” On Monday, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed a ruling authorizing the sale of the master sound recording copyrights to satisfy a debt owed to Hendricks & Lewis, the funk pioneer’s former law firm. Although the appellate court’s opinion (read here) specifically addresses Clinton’s situation, it touches upon a controversial copyright topic—works made-for-hire—that will likely have music industry lawyers examining closely.
Throughout the years, Clinton has been waging a legal war against those he believes have forged various agreements and denied him control over both his song rights and the ability to sue over them. His attention of late has focused on Hendricks & Lewis, which represented Clinton between 2005 and 2008 in an effort to pursue RICO actions and other claims against those he once did business with.
Curtis Johnson: From Soul Searching to Eternity
As we continue to usher in new generations of this Go-Go culture, one of the biggest things that I am finding the need of is maintaining historical facts of the beginning to now, but also the beginnings of the beginning. Because truth be told, the old cliche is true: You can’t really get a full understand of where you’re going if you don’t even know where you’ve been. Just think about that one for a minute.
In other words, even before the creation of Go-Go, DC has always been a live music town… full of live bands. To take it even further, that fact that it has always been a live music town is without a doubt one of the biggest reasons of how Go-Go was created in the first place. It was destined to happen. A genre that basically took on a form of its own. And the form that it had become, and continues to become, bases on many aspects of the culture as a whole.
This is why from time to time we like to do these Q&A sessions from the actual artist and musicians who have walked the walk. Because each and every story pieces together the entire story as a whole. And this particular Q&A session is now exception.
Rest In Paradise, LaMont Carson – Creator of Basement Soul Internet Radio
We at TMOTTGoGo/TMOTTRadio are truly sadden to learn the news of the passing of LaMont Carson.
LaMont, who had such a strong presence online, was the creator of the Basement Soul Onine Radio station. The work that he’s done and platform that he created touched people across the world, supporting independent artists and their music, some probably may never have even
In fact, his platform and the way he formatted his online radio station was not only the blueprint in which I closely followed, but also patterned after, when I created TMOTTRadio. And the support and dedication that he committed himself towards it is something that will truly be missed by many many people.
We would like to send our love, condolences and prayers up, out and with LaMont’s family, friends, associates, followers, students, and internet music community.
Dream Big
Bottom line, big dreamers make things happen. They flock to crop like cosmic slop… sprinkling the seams with their big ol dreams.
But enough of my failed attempt at free-style poetry. Check out the video clip below of these big dreamers Kendall, Killa Cal, Cedes and Brandi, as they hit you with their collaborative project “DREAM BIG”!
Digital Music News’ 17 Things Local Bands Just Don’t Get
Back in February, Digital Music News, posted an article giving a list of 17 things that local bands just don’t seem to understand. Now, although their particular article was written targeting a totally different demographic of what appears to be a rock music genre, I was amused to find that the same principles in them can also apply to the go-go music genre. So, we decided to share them here where we can take heed to them as well.
And they are as follows:
A Night for Funky Ned, Ju-Ju, D.Floyd, Sweet Cherie, TSE, and Jason
