They Cranked. They Grooved. They Danced and Spoke About It Too.
On the nights of September 13th and 14th a SpeakeasyDC event took place at the Atlas Performing Arts Center that focused its attention on the history and plights of Go-Go music. By the end of each night, the entire house was partying… the way it was supposed to be done.

Partial Ceiling Collapse Halts Art Gallery Honoring Go-Go
Several people were injured when a ceiling partially collapsed at a Southeast D.C. building, which was hosting a gala honoring DC’s Go-Go Music and its Historical Culture.
Emergency crews responded to the Eye Street Gallery in the 200 block of I Street SE at approximately 9 p.m.
The gallery was hosting the city’s Commission on the Arts and Humanities multimedia exhibition on go-go music.
Fire officials report that the combination of the construction and the vibrations from the show “Go-Go Swing: Washington, D.C.’s Unstoppable Beat” may have caused dust, debris and foam insulation to come crashing down on the audience. The band Black Alley was playing at the time.
Petition To Have Chuck Brown Wax Statue In Madame Tussauds
The organization Pep Rally For Peace In The Streets has set up an online petition at Change.org for the purpose of getting a wax statue created and displayed at Madame Tussauds located in Washington DC, which reads:
Chuck Brown Park Will Not Include Music Amphitheater Afterall
Whelp, it appears as though the highly anticipated Chuck Brown Memorial Park to include a music amphitheater isn’t going to happen at the level that we have been anticipating.
Based on reports from WJLA and Washington City Paper, despite a much scaled-back plan to build an amphitheater at Chuck Brown Park near Franklin and 20th Streets Northeast, have been scrapped.
In the plans delivered to the city by a contracted architect, the City Paper says that neither concept includes even a small-scale venue for live music – torpedoed, perhaps, by the continuous resistance of neighbors in the nearby Langdon neighborhood.
Chi-Ali Asantay’s Subtle Farewell To The Go-Go Game
Suttle Thoughts front man Chi-Ali has officially and socially made his announcement via Facebook that he is leaving the game.
He writes:
“I want to personally thank you all for your support over my many years in this game (go-go). I honestly couldn’t have done it without you (the people). This industry has helped me beyond what you could ever imagine. I can’t express the genuine love that I have for you all not as patrons but as friends, family, etc. I will cherish many memories of this game like performing at The Kennedy Center, meeting Chuck Brown for the first time, finding out that Little Benny & Derrick Homes were my blood relatives, meeting Big G for the first time (now that’s one that would be a good script in a movie. Lol ), and talking to Rappa Dude & Buggs on a personal level. I could go on forever. However, it comes a time when one must listen to his or her inner self, and my spirit is moving me to other realms. I hope that you all can respect and honor my departure from Go-Go. My final show will be @ Club 12 on September 21st, 2013. I will make appearances from time to time, but performing nightly will not be an option for me. Come join me & my Suttle Thoughts Family as I say farewell on September 21st, 2013. One!!!!”
